What is Hydrophobic Nonwoven Fabric? What are its Core Principles?

We are Dongguan Hendar Cloth Co.,Ltd, a professional nonwoven manufacturer in Guangdong Province, China. Next, I will introduce hydrophobic nonwoven fabric for you.
Hydrophobic nonwoven fabric is not completely "waterproof". Instead, it refers to a material whose surface, through physical or chemical effects, enables water droplets to roll on its surface in a spherical shape and prevents easy penetration. Its core principle centers on "surface modification", and the water-repellent function is mainly achieved through two methods:
① Physical Structure Modification
By adjusting the fiber arrangement density and fiber cross-sectional shape of the nonwoven fabric (e.g., using "special-shaped fibers"), or constructing micro-nano-level convex structures on the material's surface, the contact area between water droplets and the material is reduced. This forms a hydrophobic surface similar to the "lotus leaf effect" — water droplets are difficult to adhere to, thus naturally preventing easy penetration.
② Chemical Coating Modification
A water-repellent agent (such as fluorine-containing compounds, silicone resins, paraffin emulsions, etc.) is coated or impregnated on the surface of nonwoven fabric fibers. These agents combine with the fibers to form a hydrophobic film, which blocks the direct contact between water and the fibers. At the same time, it does not affect the air-permeable pore structure of the material, achieving a balance of "water repellency without air impermeability".
